RRI Practice national workshop – the Netherlands

On February 17th, the RRI-Practice national workshop of the Netherlands took place in Utrecht. The workshop included participants from a wide variety of backgrounds and organizations, including academia, industry, science funding, and policy. The discussion made clear that there are various policies and initiatives in the Netherlands that focus on enabling responsible forms of research and innovation, and that the participants have an understanding of responsibility that matches the rationale of RRI well. At the same time, perhaps because of the already strong tradition of responsibility in Dutch science and technology, RRI as a relatively new concept has not yet gained much currency, and is appraised somewhat critically. A major theme that was discussed in the workshop is how societal inclusiveness of science and technology may be strengthened. Furthermore, a main topic of discussion was how debates on RRI can be related to developments and challenges in the broader social-political context, both nationally and internationally.
